Gaslight: A Victorian Thriller was a refreshing return to realism in the Whittier College Theatre Department, which often finds itself pushing the boundaries of contemporary and experimental pieces of theatre. As the scenic and lighting designer for the piece, my goal was to create an immersive environment that served the nature of this period play. In our 3/4 thrust environment, the audience was surrounded by the walls of this Victorian sitting room to heighten the feeling of closeness to the action, but the railings were transformed into the wainscoting and rail, to give the slightest suggestion that the audience is the jury in this play. It was key to the director and myself that the details be just right for this piece, to keep the focus and attention of the audience as in the moment as possible.
